My husband and I (it's still so crazy to say that!) had our first married Valentine's Day yesterday. We had a splendid time filled with tasty foods, lovely wine, and romantic company. It was a delightful first Valentine's Day.

I've really been trying to get better at telling exactly what decade a garment is from. I know a lot of basics and can generally tell, but when it comes to late 40's/early 50's I can sometimes be stumped.
What are some good tips you all use to determine exactly what era a piece is from?

Em
That is a really lovey piece. What is it made out of?
ReplyDeleteWow, looks like a fairytale (:
ReplyDeleteThat dress is beautiful!! I like how you went with non-traditional (but stunning!) blue for valentine's day!
ReplyDeleteSome rules of thumb I use to date clothes are zippers (back zips are usually post-1950), checking for overlocked seams (more common post-1960s), and if you're lucky enough to find something with ILGWU labels, you can pinpoint a span based on the logo style. It can be very tricky to tell those late '40s-mid '50s dresses apart, though!
So beautiful!
ReplyDeletethat color looks so great on you and i love that you paired it with red shoes. happy belated valentines day!

So beautiful! That deep blue really suits you.
ReplyDeleteAs far as dating I'd say late 40s, due to the long length of the skirt and side zipper. Not to mention that "Disney" collar, so cute!

When I was in school I took a class called "Costume History" and one of our assignments was to date a vintage garment (best class ever!) We used archived copies of Harpers, and other old magazines paying particular attention to the advertisements. I used copies in our schools libraries, but Google also has the archived copies online too. Good luck! It's easy to get sucked into the magazines for hours because they are so great!
ReplyDeleteWow this dress looks great on you!! Whata a gorgeous colour :) Sounds like it was a great first Valentines day being married :) My bf came home with a rose for me at lunch time - he doesn't normally get me anything so it was a really nice suprise! :)
