Quick Messy Pin Curl Turorial

This is how I've been doing my hair the last couple of days. It works wonderfully because I have thick hair, which takes a while to pin curl, and because it gives a looser curl. Sometimes when I pin curl my hair I don't want those super tight curls.

Start off with damp hair and put a good bit of Motions Foaming Lotion (only like $3 ish dollars at Walmart). I started this set with second day hair and re-wet it, but I usually like to set it right out of the shower.

Section large pieces of hair to pin curl. I start with the bang section and put it up in one curl.

Make sure you brush out each piece before you pin curl, especially if you have naturally curly hair (as I do) so that they will be smooth.

I lay all the pin curls flat on my head for this style. I curl the ones on my left side clock wise and the ones on the right counter clock wise. You don't have to be nice and neat with these, just throw them up there in large chunks.

The finished product. Took my about 5 to 10 minutes and there are about ten pin curls. It's not supposed to look neat and tidy.

Then sleep on them or wear them about during the day. Make sure they are COMPLETELY dry or you'll deal with fallen out curls and they won't stay. Even if you have to wait a few extra hours, it'll be worth it.

Start taking the bobby pins out gently, don't take the bangs down yet. (You all get to see how light my eye brows actually are)

After they're all down. It's a much calmer look from regular smaller pin curls.

Brush it all out. If it looks crazy or not quite right keep brushing it and moving the curl in the direction you want it to go.

After you've gotten a nice shape pin back the right side, or whichever side your bangs are not on with bobby pins.

Now it's time to take the bangs down.

Brush them out in the direction of the curl until they're nice and smooth.

Curl up and secure with a bobby pin or two.

Then hair spray the crap out of it. Smooth down all the frizzy bits.

And there you have it! Nice loose curls. I lightened the second photo quite a bit in hopes that you could see more detail since my hair is so dark.

Let me know if you all have any questions! I may try a video tutorial next time.

xo,
 Em

  2. I have really thick hair too, and I've done pin curls before, but often takes AGES, like you said. And I have yet to really get the hang of traditional sponge curlers. I really think I will be trying this in the near future! Thanks for the tutorial.

  4. Cute! Thanks for the tutorial--think I'm going to try this tonight! I've been doing that trick where you wrap your hair around the headband (which ends up looking like this: http://eef-etc.com/2012/photos-on-my-birthday/ ), but my hair is a bit too short in the back for it, so hopefully I can gt some pin curls back there!

  5. Hmmm, I have super thick hair and pin curls seem to be my cryptonite {sp?}, but I think I might have to try this. I even have the Motions hair product stuff. :)

  9. It's cute! This is basically what I do but my hair's so long now it doesn't hold loose curls anymore :/

(Oh, and for the record, I find photo tutorials better than video! I can look at them anywhere and not have to worry about the audio bothering people, and it's easier to go back and check a single step without having to remember where it was in the video :) That's just me though!)

  11. Such a sweetly pretty style. The final style speaks of summer to me and seems like the perfect hairstyle for a sun-kissed, perfectly relaxing picnic or seaside outing.

Thank you sweetly, dear gal, for your wonderfully kind comment on my vintage outfit post yesterday. I never thought there was anything special about my skin (especially since it's ultra sensitive and usually rather dry), but it would appear that those in the blog world think there is. So moral boosting! :)

Wishing you a gorgeous day & month of April,
    Jessica

  14. Thank you for your sweet comment on my DIY attempt...if you could see this poor scarf/cardigan up close, you'd know it was a bit of a struggle! Yes, I'm just south of Nashville, I teach in Franklin. We should go for coffee or thrifting sometime! Enjoy this beautiful day!
